When single mother, Annie Malone, purchases a quirky Main Street café on Heron Island, she thinks she’s finally turned her dream of opening her own restaurant into a reality. Hearing rumors that a developer is about to build a five-star resort on the sleepy Chesapeake Bay island, she plans to transform the café into a premier upscale bistro. But Navy SEAL, Will Dozier, has no intention of selling his grandparents’ property to a developer. Back on Heron Island for the first time in ten years and secretly struggling with PTSD, Will decides that a fling with the new girl is the perfect way to help him “get his head straight.” The last thing Will expects is to fall in love…with his hometown and with Annie. But Wills life and career are in San Diego with the SEALs. Can Annie’s love and the healing magic of the island be enough to convince him to stay?

My rating: 4 of 5 ⭐️

After a traumatic event caused Annie Malone to leave Washington DC, with her 8-year old daughter Taylor, she opted for the quiet surroundings of Chesapeake Bay and Heron Island. After hearing of a possible influx of tourists if and when a new proposed resort opens, Annie is hoping to realize her own dream of revamping a cute little cafe she purchased into a high end restaurant. But most of all, she is looking to settle down in a place where she can keep her daughter safe and secure.

It's been six months since the death of his grandparents, and ten years since the last time he was on Heron Island, but to Navy Seal Will Dozier everything felt and looked the same as ever. Except the memories were bittersweet. The years he spent overseas battling the same enemies that took so much from his life, did very little to ease his sense of loss and coming back here only seemed to remind him. But he will only be here for a few weeks, long enough to go through his grandparents belongings and check out the offer on the old Inn.

When Will finds out from that gorgeous redhead who is planning to reopen the old cafe that a resort is scheduled to go up on his family's property, however, he immediately turns down the offer. Will is sorry that he may have disrupted Annie's plans for the herds of tourists she had envisioned flocking to Heron Island, but he was not about to sacrifice the home he grew up in. Not even for the dedicated single mother who was slowly turning him inside out.

Annie struggles to make adjustments to her plans so she could keep the roof over her and Taylor's heads, while also trying to keep from falling head over heels for the very charming but also dangerously conflicted SEAL who seems to have taken a shine to her and her daughter. An effort that proves to be impossible....

*****

Wonderful, heartwarming start of a new series!!

Sophie Moss uses a smooth, rich and flawless style of writing that sets an atmosphere, framing the story perfectly. The story is one that shows a warm small town setting as something of a safe haven against some of the traumatic events that made the recent news reels. The characters colourful and diverse, creating a great base to build a series on.

Annie had her daughter as a single teenage mom. She had very little help from her mother and only her devotion to her daughter and her own tenacity and strength of character have brought her this far. She is very intuitive in dealing with the aftermath of the event that made them leave DC and that same intuition is serving her well in figuring out what is bothering Will.

Will is devoted to bringing down those who took all meaning from his life with their terrorist acts. All his focus has been there for ten years, except.... it hasn't brought him any relief, regardless of any progress made. Meeting Annie and Taylor, he feels an immediate connection. It takes the prospect of losing everything to bring him to the realization that he has finally found it all.

The heat in this book is gentle, but not without some solid chemistry. And talking about chemistry, some tentative connections for future books are made as well...... Something to look forward to!!

✨A strong, emotional and vibrant story of healing.✨
