"A cold-blooded killer with a burning obsession…

Rachel de Luca has a bad feeling about the new woman in Detective Mason Brown's life, the nurse taking care of him after he's injured in the line of duty. She'd like to think it's just jealousy, but intuition tells her it's something more, maybe something dangerous.

Mason knows Rachel's wary of commitment, and asking her to stay when he's in this condition would be the worst thing for their relationship. Then they receive chilling news that drives everything else from their minds.

Mason's psychotic sister-in-law has escaped from custody, putting her sons — the nephews he's raising — in the crosshairs. When his house is burned to the ground, he and Rachel are relieved that there are no bodies in the smoldering rubble, but now his nephews are missing and the clock is ticking.

As Mason and Rachel try to find the boys, she senses a new and unexpected danger stalking them. Soon, everyone close to Mason is in deadly peril — Rachel more than anyone…."

*****

If you haven't had a chance to read the Brown & DeLuca books by Maggie Shayne yet, I recommend you get started! Although I recommend you start at the beginning to truly appreciate the full scope of this series!

DEADLY OBSESSION is the latest novel featuring Mason Brown and Rachel DeLuca, who are tentatively growing in their relationship amidst murder and mayhem. This time it is at the hands of a deranged 'nurse' whose obsession with finding the Right One placed her on Mason Brown's doorstep under false pretenses. For Rachel, red flags go off immediately, although given her feelings for Mason, the cause for the red flags is unsure. Is it jealousy? Or perhaps her extra-sensory observations at work? When both Mason and Rachel are drawn in to a case of arson, neither realize that the answers are closer to home than they would think.

The relationship between these two has been slow in progressing, compared to most. For Mason, the responsibility for his nephews has demanded his focus and for Rachel, it is twenty years of defensive living to break out of. Romance is something neither of them are very well versed in, and feelings are generally not discussed. Some of the events in this book force both of them to take a long hard look at themselves, each other and life in general, and result in better communication and a tighter bond.

Maggie Shayne's books are humerous (if you enjoy a tough, slightly ascerbic heroine with a soft underbelly), well plotted and written with refreshing insight and intelligence. The balance between romance, suspense and the occasional heated moment makes it impossible to stop reading.

✨Strong, clever and freaking fantastic!✨
