Sophia

Sometimes, you don't mean to become another person. Sometimes the choice is made for you, and pretending is the only thing that keeps you going. When Alexis Romera is taken and her kidnappers find her fake ID in her purse, she must become Sophia in order to keep her family safe. Revealing her real identity to the man she's sold to would be easy enough, but can she trust him? Hell bent on revenging the murder of his uncle, Rebel doesn't seem all that interested in playing things safe.

In fact, nothing about the secretive, dark and brooding MC president seems safe at all.

Rebel

What do you do when the man who raised you is murdered, and the only witness is kidnapped girl who's being sold as a sex slave? You buy her, of course. As president to the most powerful motorcycle club in America, Rebel isn't lacking in power. There are strings the man can pull, and entire criminal organisations and corporate businesses alike would fall to their knees. However, along with such power comes intense interest. The DEA have their eye fixed solely on the MC...and they're just waiting for Rebel to trip up.

Getting Sophia to testify is the only way to bring the Los Oscuros cartel down. The beautiful, dark haired, dark eyed woman is belligerent and uncooperative and unlikely to bend to his will, but Rebel has a few tricks up his sleeve to make her compliant--he'll charm her until she's bending over backwards to please him.

Of course, falling for her might cause a few hiccups along the way…

*****

This first book in the Blood & Roses spin-off series Dead Man’s Ink by Callie Hart starts at a point in time actually pre-dating the onset of Zeth and Sloane’s stories.
It outlines the premise on which the Blood & Roses series was built. The disappearance of Alexis Romera.

Alexis, a twenty-one year old who has lead a fairly privileged and relatively sheltered life finds herself witness to a murder. An event that drags her from the safety of her rather mundane life into a nightmare of violence, cartels and human trafficking. Sold as a piece of property to a man who claims only to want her testimony, not her body, has her instincts of self-preservation kick up in high gear. Determined not to to trust anyone, she resists every step of the way.

Rebel, president of a powerful MC has just managed to intercept possibly the only witness to his uncle’s murder at the hands of a violent and feared cartel. That he had to fork over a large amount of money is nothing new - he’s done it before and will likely do it again. Ever since since losing someone near to him to the trafficking ring he has kept close tabs on their movements. Violence against women is not something he or his club condones, but this woman manages to test his resolve, while at the same time chipping away at the hard shell the years have formed around his heart.

Although with slightly less impact as the initial book of the Blood & Roses series and perhaps a little more predictable, REBEL is no less compelling in writing style and characterization. A slightly mellower flavour for the the book’s hero and perhaps less desperate angst on the part of the heroine make this read a tad less dark. It may also simply be that we’ve about seen and read it all in terms of the dark sides of humanity - and just don’t get the same initial visceral response we did the first time around.

Callie Hart is without a doubt an extremely talented writer who could pick any subject to feature and make it into a compelling read. I don’t care much what is on the back page, as long as Callie Hart authored it, it is worth the read for me.
I cannot wait to follow these two along….
