Trish Lawson never thought she’d meet a man willing to put up with her type of crazy, but Alex Darrow might end up surprising her.
Alex was never meant to become my lover. On top of being hot as sin, he is gentle, sweet, and honest – not the kind of fun I was looking for. But fate has other plans for us, entwining a thread around our souls and pulling us closer at every turn. Soon, I start to believe that we might have a future together.
That our love is precious.
In the end, fate decides to play the ultimate trick on us, and we are left bleeding and in torment.
The pain becomes too much to bear, and I attempt to sever the tie between us.
The only problem is that Alex won’t let me.
He turns my body into flames of lust while his lips speak of his love for me.
My heart still aches from the loss we share, but I don’t know if I can keep resisting him.
Author's Note: previouly published as a short story to feature in The Love After Losing Anthology, but has now been expanded. Can be read as a standalone.

“You must spend a lot of time working out, I guess?”
He winks at me as he leans across the bed to give me a kiss.
“Yup. But I really don’t want to talk about that right now.”
I hum as his tongue traces my lips.
“Oh?” I sigh. “What do you want to talk about, then?”
Let’s not talk at all. Just keep kissing me.
His mouth leaves mine and he grabs my hips, lifts me up and puts me down on top of him. I wrap my arms around his neck, already a little turned on.
His arms rest lightly on my hips as his eyes wander over my naked body.
“I want,” he starts slowly, “you, Trish.”
I chuckle.
“You have me, babe.”
No sooner have the words left my mouth than he shakes his head.
“I don’t mean only for tonight. I want you for far longer than that.”
Frowning, I fiddle with the ends of his hair.
“You’re talking about having an exclusive relationship, aren’t you?” I whisper.
He nods, his eyes serious.
Sighing, I shrug.
“I’m not sure I can give you that, Alex. I don’t think I’m made for it, to be honest.”
“Explain.”
I wet my lips as I look away from him. He deserves an honest answer from me, but I wish he wouldn’t push for one already.
“Can’t we just continue seeing each other whenever we fancy?” I hedge.
He sighs, his jaw ticking.
“Look, I’m a simple man,” he grumbles. “I’m thirty-nine years old, Trish. I’m done with playing games. I want you more than I’ve wanted anyone else in my life, but I’m not going to be your fuck buddy.”
I wince at the harshness of his voice.
“Don’t cheapen us,” I whisper.
“I’m not the one doing it, Trish. You are. You’re belittling what we might be. What are you so afraid of?”
I shake my head and make a move to get off his lap, but his arms hold me in a tight grip.
“I don’t want to fight, Alex,” I seethe, “but it seems like you’re hell-bent on having one.”
He purses his lips.
“That’s not what I’m trying to do,” he sighs. “I’m just trying to tell you how I feel.”
“Well, stop, because it’s ruining my mood,” I huff and cross my arms.
“Stop being so scared,” he whispers.
“Stop telling me I’m scared.”
Our eyes lock, neither one of us willing to back down. Eventually, I roll my eyes, frustrated with the both of us.
“You’re so stubborn,” he grumbles.
“I’m Scottish, babe. It’s in my blood, so you’ll just have to deal with it.”
He grins, making my mouth pop open in shock.
“Fine. I’m willing to let it go this time, but don’t think you’ve won, angel.”
“Wait, what?”
“You heard me. I’m a strong-headed Scot myself. I’ll get my way in the end.”
“Excuse me?”
I sit up straighter and plant my fists on my hips. When Alex’s gaze sweeps down over my breasts, I clear my throat.
“Okay, you know what? I don’t want to fight, so let’s play some games instead.”
His arms squeeze me gently before he pulls me closer, and I shiver when I feel his cock twitch between my centre. It hardens further beneath me, and I smile triumphantly.
Crisis diverted.
“What kind of games?” he murmurs and blows on my nipple. I tremble and lean closer, rubbing myself on his cock.
“Are you opposed to handcuffs?” I whisper and let my arms fall to my sides.
His eyes snap up to mine. I wet my lips as I wait for his answer.
“Not if I get to put them on you.”
I smirk and bend my head to catch his earlobe between my lips.
“Perfect,” I breathe.
Even though Karen is Danish, she has always felt more at ease writing stories in English, and she is a complete Anglophile and bookaholic. She loves Italian food and wine, travelling, and spending time with her family. When she is not writing, she reads – her favourite genres are New Adult, Contemporary Romance, Erotica and Romantic Suspense. She can never get enough of romance.
Or of too many book boyfriends, either.
