4.5 Emotionally Gritty Stars
I am not sure I can find the right words to give this book it's true justice. In her normal fashion Aly Martinez sucked me in with characters that felt real. As you read about these two emotionally scarred people you can see how they are searching for truth and honesty in their lives. Though they spend most of the time telling lies to get by, to avoid hurting others, giving others a better sense of worth while trying to dig to new heights.
Penn Walker is a man on a mission of revenge. He has spent the last 4 years lost in a horror that just won't go away. When he comes face to face with the one woman who might be able to help him get that revenge, he is dumbfounded. She pulls at him in a way that no woman has ever before and he knows he is going to have to fight very hard to stay away and keep his eye on the prize.
Cora has not had a simple life by any means and someone looking in would be exhausted. But she has it better than many of the girls in the house she runs for he dead husbands, family. Again not everything in life is by choice. She does her best to make life as best as it can be for the two young girls she has taken under her wing. Secretly working to get herself prepared to leave that world once and for all.
She was not prepared for the new handy men in the building or the feelings that Penn would bring to light. Will these new found feelings bring something good or are they just more heartache to add to the pile?
The twists and turns in the plot are a lot to take in but they keep you turning the pages, reading past bed time and then you have reached the major plot twist at the end and..... OMG is it September yet? I need the other half of this Duet now, I need to know that everyone will be OK, that there is happiness to be found somewhere.
