4.5 of 5 Stars
This is my first Jessica Gomez read and I can tell you it will not be my last. I love that Jessica took some time to build the story through the characters in the beginning. By about the 5th chapter I felt I had a good understanding of the relationships between Jase, Jasmine, Marisol and Alex.
Jase is everything that you would want in a twin brother; caring, protective and loving. Jase spent all of his spare time with Jasmine and their best friends Marisol and Alex. When Jase starts to notice Marisol differently, he tries to brush it off. As time move along he comes to realized that he just might not be able to do that but worries about how everyone will react. He is not certain that he is willing to take that next step and change the dynamics of the groups friendship.
Marisol has always thought Jase was good looking. She has admired the way he cares for Jasmine and is always trying to be there to protect her. Suddenly one day it is like someone has flipped a switch and she has different feelings for Jase, can this really be happening? What if things go sour? These initial feeling are so hard when you can't talk to anyone about them for fear of looking your best friend.
Jessica does an amazing job of growing these characters and making you feel their thoughts and emotions while reading. I felt like I was a bystander in the school halls watching things unfold.
I realize that this is the prequel to After the Before and many have read it first. They may have some slightly different reactions to events of the story as they have some background. But I am confident the final outcome will be the same.
