Believe it or not, this was my first book by Nashoda Rose. It won't be my last, that's for sure. And if I can find the time, I will read the books by her that preceded this one.
The opening sequence had me hooked, line and sinker. Emotionally descriptive and gut-wrenching, the devastating news that sent Georgie in an apparent tailspin for years, was brilliantly written. She was only sixteen when she lost her brother, and in the years since then she appears to have teetered on the edge of self-destruction. But Georgie is a master at disguise; of her feelings that is. There is an underlying purpose to everything she does. Protection, mainly, though it takes us a good long time to find out why.
And protection is the only thing that drives Deck. He will do so at any cost. His feelings, Georgie and the memory of a brother once lost. A well-intentioned promise to a fallen comrade many moons ago, has kept Deck a constant presence in Georgie's life, but it also has kept him from acting on his attraction to his 'brother's' baby sister. When he thinks his charge may be spinning out of control, he jumps in, only to find himself victim to a well-orchestrated deception. Protective instincts now on high alert, He is unable to keep himself from finally claiming her.
There are so many layers to this story. Each and every one of them revealing a more indepth understanding of this intricate tale. Dark and twisted, the underlying truth is chilling to the bone. Nashoda Rose keeps the surprises coming, so that turning the pages becomes an involuntary action. I inhaled this book, and will make sure I'll never miss another novel by Ms. Rose again!!
