Her mouth still open with the news she is fired from Cross Enterprises, Allie, former cop and lover of owner of the investigation company, as well as her boss, Tristan, sees her dreamed up future disappear into mist. This did not bode well for her own piece of what should have been big news, and she is about to beeline it out of his office when he blocks her way and demands to set some things straight. And straight they get.....but no less complicated.
Their renewed mutual assurances and amended working relationship goes a long way to settle the waters. But when Allie's biggest fear becomes real once again and demands to be dealt with, all feelings of contentment and domestic bliss fly out the window to make room for the familiar pull of panic and paranoia. Once again Tristan uses his vast resources to ensure, this time permanently, that no harm can come to their new and loving home.
Lulled into complacency, will it leave Allie exposed to danger, or is it really gone for good this time .
*****
Another blistering hot instalment of the Layers Trilogy! This time with a very HEA and without the cliffhanger......and yet....there is a third book yet to come. One that is supposed to retrace all the way back to the very beginning, and will show every little secret still until-revealed, exposed.
Because despite the fact that there is a HEA in this book, there are questions left. Questions in particular around Tristan and his ongoing concern with Kendra, an old girlfriend who turned to drugs and self-destruction after her broke up with her. She is very much involved with his entire family clan and although clean now, after being rescued from a white slavery auction in the first book, by Allie.
There are dynamics working within the family around Kendra that are very unclear as of yet. Tristan hasn't offered any explanations and Allie hasn't demanded any, feeling secure enough in Tristan's apparent devotion to her. Although throughout this book, she has her moments of insecurity around just that issue.
As mentioned the sex is hot, as it was in book one. Hot and frequent, and the chemistry between Allie and Tristan is definitely a tangible thing. The romance was almost overwhelming in its abundance. Tristan was being a perfect guy......saying everything right, doing everything right, treating Allie like a queen. A tad too perfect.
Although we don't miss out on action once again in Layers Peeled, especially at the beginning, the story is simply a continuation of the same line followed in the previous book, except a little stretched out. I can't help but feel that the entirety of these two installments could have been better served as one complete book. But then, I haven't read the third part yet......
Layers Peeled was well-written, albeit not quite as engaging and smooth as Layers Deep was. It simply wasn't cohesive enough on its own. I will most definitely keep my eyes open for Layers Off, the final book in The Layers Trilogy!!
✨A seductive and sinister account of outrunning your past.✨
