How do you prepare to write romance? Do you have any special things you do to get ready? How about writing particularly dramatic scenes?
"There is really no preparation involved when writing a romance novel. For me, there is no amount of research that can do justice to anything I write if the emotion is foreign to me. I don’t consider myself an expert when it comes to the affairs of the heart. I solely base my writing on what I feel and what I have experienced throughout the years. A famous adage says: Write what you know. Simply stated, I dig deep and let my imagination dictate the rest.
All I need to begin writing a novel is a character outline and my music playlist. Music is like air to me. It sets the mood and keeps me company while I plow away. This might come as a shock to a lot of people. Often times, I associate a particular song to the story I’m currently writing. I listen to the same song over and over. Call me obsessive but the song I replayed so much whilewriting Feather Light is Lover Lay down by Dave Matthews band.
For dramatic scenes, I try to find the balance between capturing the intensity of the moment and without descending too deep into melodrama and overdoing it. It’s easy to get caught in the heat of the conflict and inundate the story with unnecessary details."
